Revisiting "An Unfair Guide"

Mission Paradox Blog

Viva Las Vegas baby. I'm a bit like Stephen King, some of my best writing was years ago.    In that spirit I wanted to introduce (or re-introduce) you to a little e-book I wrote called An Unfair Guide to Building a Nonprofit Board of Directors.    It's yours.    It's free. With that said, it's time for a vacation.    I'll be bringing back a few more of my "greatest hits" blog posts while I'm gone.

Awareness

Mission Paradox Blog

The beautiful thing about Las Vegas is that it knows exactly what it is. I'm back.    let's get to it. -. It's sex.    It's gambling.    It's pop culture. And they are very comfortable with that. That's part of the reason the marketing of the town works so effectively.    They embrace who they are. There's an element of that in any great marketing campaign.

For Nonprofit Leaders’ Eyes Only

The incredible thing about Zappo’s is that you can call them up at 10pm and ask, “I need to find pizza in Las Vegas, can you help me?” SO you’ve been told that you need to be on all of these social media platforms. Do you really? Are your donors on Facebook? Not necessarily. Did you know that 80% of the people on Facebook are not in the US ? Did you know the fastest growing demographic on Facebook is 50+ year old women ? Are they your target audience?

Meet Me At The Bar. Not!

The Agitator

In addition to the headline-making woes of Las Vegas, singled out by President Obama for hosting junkets of corporations receiving federal bailout funds, virtually every convention city is feeling the pain. This recession affects everything. And the convention/conference business is no exception.

The right conditions

Mission Paradox Blog

I'm in Las Vegas.  But in Vegas, I don't think twice. Because, in ways both big and small, Vegas has created the right conditions for people to spend more money then they normally would. From the grocery line, to Vegas, to a house party where folks sell Avon and Mary Kay, they all teach us that it is possible to create conditions where people are more inclined to buy what you are offering. You're in line at the grocery store.

The art of luxury

Mission Paradox Blog

People don't buy IPad's or stay at the Wynn Las Vegas because it makes rational sense.  I find consumer behavior fascinating and I think if you are trying to put your art into the marketplace, you should study it a bit as well.    So take a look at this article, The New Abnormal.    It describes a consumer market that is becoming, "all dollar stores and luxury."

Embracing what you don't understand

Mission Paradox Blog

It's 11:30pm in Vegas.    Hundreds of folks start streaming in to line up at the various nightclubs inside of Wynn Las Vegas.   I grab my buddies and we take the short trip from LA to Vegas.    But I'm still on Chicago time so it feels like 1:30am. So I'm a little tired. Plus my last journey to the craps table didn't go well.    So I'm a little cranky.

Nothing to say

Mission Paradox Blog

My peeps at Wynn Las Vegas don't have to pay me a dime to rave about them. I get this question a lot: "How can get my audience/friends to spread the word about my art?" " I'll be honest, my first instinct when I'm asked this question is to dance around it.  I want to talk about the use of social media, smart use of referrals, that sort of thing.
