A year ago, with the release of the mid-year results of the Blackbaud Charitable Index — online and offline — we reminded readers now is a great time to make sure they get their share of year-end giving. You’ll recall that as much as 20+ % of the annual contributions for most organizations come in the last 30 days of the year. Especially so for online contributions. Blackbaud is back this year with its half-year report and forecast for the balance of 2014.

On the one hand, the fundraising year is almost two-thirds over. On the other hand, the ‘highest yield’ third of the year is just about to begin. Many fundraisers are using the ‘lull before the storm’ to ready your fundraising weapons and reaffirm or fine-tune your fall/year-end fundraising tactics. And … revisit your fundraising projections. How much of your annual revenue are you expecting to take in over the final four months of the year … 50%? Two-thirds?

The New Email Metric You Might Want to Try

So I decided to find out by analyzing four newsletters in August. I started by going back to the email reports for the e-newsletters we sent on August 3, 10, 17, and 24. So for example, if you were sent an email on August 3, you opened, and you clicked on it, I added these three tags to your record: 080316 – Sent. If you were sent that August 3 edition, but you didn’t open or click on it, you would just get that first “Sent” tag. In August!
