Winning Ideas And Idea Killers

The Agitator

People loved them, had to have them, and Detroit was dragged along. From two marketers I read faithfully, Willis Turner and Seth Godin, here are some ideas on ideas. Willis wrote 3 Deadly Fundraising Words You Probably Don’t Even Realize You’re Saying recently in Fundraising Success. He did a wonderful riff on how the (then!!) Big Three US auto manufacturers steadfastly resisted the idea of putting cup holders in their cars. Eventually they showed up in Japanese cars.

Earlier this week, it penned this piece for the Detroit Free Press. What’s your hook? This question likely looms over you daily if your job is to pitch stories to the media or create content for your organization’s owned media channels. To get your story picked up and noticed, it’s critical to have something current to latch on to — a hook that adds a sense of urgency by connecting to something that’s happening right now. The good news is that there are plenty of good hooks out there.

#Fundraising: Smaller Donations Can Bring Bigger Change During Recession

Non Profit Marketing 360

Christina Xu has stood up recently as a champion of microdonations for the work her organization does in Detroit. Her most recent post at PBS’s MediaShift Blog pertains to efforts by local foundations around Detroit, MI that specialize in offering microdonations of $1ooo to $5000 to help revitalize the Motor City. The definition of a ‘microdonation’ can be tricky, or at least scalable. For many of us, a $50 donation to our favorite cause is no micro-gift.

This is especially true in the nonprofit world, where communicators are constantly having to raise enough money to keep the lights on while also achieving the mission. So we take shortcuts. We regurgitate old press releases and repurpose the same templates for our annual reports and donor communications.

There is no path

Mission Paradox Blog

We are all living in our version of Detroit, where the stable, predictable opportunities are gone. I get a lot of questions from artists and arts administrators about what their career path should be.  So here's a friendly reminder: There is no such thing as a career path. We are well past the days when a person could reasonably expect a fairly linear path from one job or gig to the next. That's true for the arts and I think that's true for most other career paths.

Life After Fundraising

The Agitator

Less than two hours ago, at a crowded press launch here in Shanghai – and at a similar press event in Detroit – Chevrolet announced a three-year sponsorship of the One World Futbol Project. “Life after fundraising” doesn’t mean you stop trying to save the world. Take the example of one of our favorite fundraising veterans, Mal Warwick. Mal ‘dropped out’ of fundraising a couple of years ago to devote his energies to One World Futbol.

In recent months, we’ve had great success helping nonprofit and foundation leaders write and place pieces in national and international outlets like the USA Today and the International Business Times , major metros like The Washington Post and the Detroit Free Press , and smaller, local outlets like The Buffalo News and New York’s Straus Newspapers. The coming weeks are the busiest of the year for nonprofit communicators.
