learned fundraising and worked behind the scenes on the local telethon here in Boston. even got to travel to the national office, which had recently moved from New York City to Tuscon, Arizona and got to meet some of the founders of the organization. MDA launched my career as a fundraiser and a cause marketer.

If you read this blog regularly, you know that I often suggest that when an organization goes to plan anything, they take stock. It's good to research the organization's relevant region's (or regions':): economy, fundraising climate, a nonprofit's beneficiaries' current but as yet unmet needs, etc. Also, it's only 26 pages long.

Never pay a grant writer a portion of a grant that your organization receives after they write the proposal for it. This is called ' contingency pay', and it is unethical in American fundraising.
