Unlike most business strategies, social media is built on a culture that is developed by the people who are involved in digital communities. The concepts of transparency, authenticity, honesty and passion for the topic/brand have evolved as 'society norms' for communicating and forming relationships in the world of the social web.
As marketers began to use social media platforms like blogs, Twitter, Facebook, etc., In an environment where your changing avatar is accepted as your image to the world, where people exchange ideas that frequently lead to business opportunities and where 'real' friendships are formed it was important to have a few boundaries that could help establish trust.

Over the past decade there has been a dramatic shift in the emphasis of determinants of health and social behaviors from individuals to networks and communities. For example, in three major areas of interest for public health officials and social marketers – the prevention of HIV infection, obesity and tobacco use – the role of social networks in disease transmission and the prevalence of risk behaviors is creating new opportunities for both concepts and practices that focus on social units of analysis, change and outcome.
Concurrent sexual partnerships , that is, having two or more stable sexual partners over time is being seen as one of the previously hidden drivers of the HIV epidemic .

Social media comprise the vast array of communications vehicles including blogs, wikis, e-mail, and social networking sites that are powered by the Internet. Social media can be best understand by what they are NOT. Social media are NOT mass media, defined by Wikipedia, as "traditional means of communication" like television or newspaper or radio that were "envisioned and designed to reach a VERY LARGE AUDIENCE such as the population of a nation state.

The strategic use of social media is about changing your perspective, not using new communication tools. The talks I give about social media and social marketing these days focus almost exclusively on the shift we need to make in how we think about interacting with people formerly known as the audience and much less on the tactics, or how to use specific social and mobile media tools. Fortunately, in the past four years, many But the pace of adoption of social media in public health and social marketing programs is outpacing the understanding that social media is not simply a new set of communication tools to substitute for, or complement, posters, pamphlets, PSAs and publicity events . A number of points about strategy and social media came together for me over the past few days as I have been consulting on five different social media projects at various stages of development.

I’m always blown away whenever I step outside of the social media fishbowl/community and step into reality.
Google Docs is the ultimate tool for when you need wiki functionality, but don’t necessarily want to open it up to the public and/or you just have a short term initiative in mind.

What was clear is that social media is playing a bigger role in disaster preparedness and response than ever before. As we went into the holiday weekend, I watched in awe from the sidelines as a tribe of people on Twitter mobilized to put social media tools into place to deal with the anticipated disaster, building on what had been created two years earlier on an ad hoc basis in the social aftermath of Katrina. With a volunteer While at this point it is apparent that Hurricane Gustav is not going to turn into another Katrina, at the end of last week it was not so clear.
