I’ve seen lots of interest from nonprofits in using video to communicate with supporters about their causes, along with an equal amount of trepidation about how to do it. Steve Braker of Worthwhile Films | Nonprofit Media posted some do-it-yourself video tips on Facebook (you should be able to see it even without a Facebook account). Cymberly Pierce on her blog, Clever Title, also offers I’m not a video expert, but I know several people who are, so I put out a call over Twitter for some guest posts to share with you. As you may know, I am in the middle of writing the full-length, printed book version of Nonprofit Marketing Guide, to be published in Spring 2010 by Jossey-Bass . As As I was writing various chapters on both strategy and tactics, I realized that I was making choices about what to include and what to leave out based on my own set of assumptions about the world that nonprofit communicators are working in. Here So I decided to make the first chapter of the book a summary of these assumptions.

It included terms from 2009 such as friend (as a verb—thanks, Facebook); Tweet (good luck not using that one, nonprofiteers); and chillaxin’ (which I’m pretty sure isn’t a word to begin with, but yes, it’s tremendously annoying and disturbingly ubiquitous). Well, that got us thinking… What words do we nonprofit people overuse or misuse, and what terms are generally useless or shouldn’t be used? Recently, Lake Superior State University published its 35th annual List of Banished Words for Mis-use, Over-use and General Uselessness. So without further ado, here’s a short list

When people talk about mistakes nonprofits make with their websites, the first thing that comes to mind is usually either no direct donate button from the front page, or an unclear mission statement. Because that's what a nonprofit is: A public trust. Lack of trust in nonprofits leads to lack of donations, and restrictions on what we can ultimately accomplish. But I'd like to focus on a different type of mistake; lack of transparency. First off, what do I mean by "transparency?"

There's lots of talk about how nonprofits should be using "Web 2.0" - interactive applications, two-way online communications, user generated content, "social media," etc. - and new media can suddenly make a local grassroots nonprofit into a global powerhouse, it's about how these tools can be used to better communicate with, and expand, the base that you already have.
