Direct mail maven Denny Hatch recently wrote "They Forgot the Importance of ‘YOU’", a column in which he took the Obamas to task for their losing performances in trying to sell Chicago to the International Olympic Committee.
The piece also reminds me of news we recently got from creative whiz Jeff Brooks, who some of you know as (former) writer of the Donor Power Blog. Whatever you think of his analysis, Denny reminds us of two key points to keep in mind when writing direct sales or fundraising copy …

The glow of the Obama campaign and its ability to mobilize people has certainly dimmed in the past few months. And over half (56%) of these active online adults use digital tools such as email and group websites to communicate with each other. And despite this sobering news, a new set of free tools for grassroots movements is being launched. When it comes to whether the internet is stimulating an increase in social action and making it more accessible to all, however, a new report by the Pew Internet and American Life Project on The Internet and Civic Engagement concludes: Contrary to the hopes of some advocates, the internet is not changing the socioeconomic character of civic engagement in America.

Very interesting that Barack Obama decided to announce his presidential exploratory committee via the web yesterday. That video, which features Obama speaking directly to the camera in a home setting, has been featured on major news sites and blogs around the world.

I've continued to ponder the value of tweeting -- even as I do it -- but see clearly its unique value in getting news out of Iran (and organized protest going on the scene) when the more traditional lines (Internet, phone have been shut down). Iranian citizens are participating, and Twitter is simply their means of doing so , as Andrew Sullivan comments: The key force behind this is the next generation, the Millennials, who elected Obama in America and may oust Ahmadinejad in Iran. The Pew Internet and American Life Project - a great source of information on all things Internet - says that “a record-breaking 46% of Americans used the Internet, email or cell phone text messaging to get news about the campaign, share their views and mobilize others.” More important, this multi-media communication turned into a pile of gold for the Obama Campaign, i.e. (This post is also archived on www.emailforimpact.com .) 2008 will most certainly be remembered as the year that we elected the first African American President.
