Yesterday I reminisced about the “old days&# when a small handful of “big brand&# media delivered the news that fueled the fire in the belly of donors to many causes. Organizations like Amnesty International, Greenpeace, the ACLU. And that recognition is a huge facilitator of the message to follow. Maybe 100 … 200 at most?

Show me an individual, anywhere in the US, who listened to NPR, or watched PBS (e.g., If you knew a particular issue interest of mine, probably your best bet for targeting me would be an online source (media or otherwise) narrowly dedicated to that issue, or, buying the search term(s) I’m likely to be using. information) sources.

What was clear is that social media is playing a bigger role in disaster preparedness and response than ever before. With a volunteer effort led by Andy Carvin of NPR, the work centered around a Ning social network called the Gustav Information Center and a related wiki. And its Safe and Well list can also be accessed via Twitter.
