By instituting the fine, the daycare center switched rulebooks, from social norms, which are governed by values of community, selflessness, and altruism, to market norms, which are governed by calculated self-interest. Once the daycare conversation shifted from social to market, parents stopped feeling guilty about making the teachers stay late, and made a self-interested calculation – that coming a few minutes late was worth a few bucks.
This was a tough year-end for a lot of fundraising organizations. Time for some sober reflection and some self-honesty.
