In a time when we rely more and more on virtual interaction, face-to-face gatherings are more important than ever. In talking to colleagues about Eventbrite, I've found several fans of its capabilities such as the once-click opportunity for attendees to share event info with their Twitter and Facebook networks. Don't get me wrong--I'm a big believer in building relationships, and community, online. But face-to-face can't be replaced.

Stumble upon something good? Can you take your skills into the 21st century? Last week I attended the RISE Austin conference. One session I attended was with Manuel Zarate , President and Founder of HBMGinc.com.

asked my Twitter network for ideas on resources that might help her make the case with a reluctant organization. Dawn Crawford , who is the Communications Director at the Colorado Children's Immunization Coalition ( @ImmunizeCOKids on Twitter) very generously offered to share what she had learned, having been in a similar situation. Jumping into social media and securing your brand’s identity – Twitter ID, Facebook vanity URL, blog name – you can stop others Not too long ago, I was providing technical assistance to a staff member at a local health department whose agency was not open to letting her use certain social media tools to engage with their community.

Twitter Island. No, it’s not a place in Second Life where everyone uses twitter. (Didn’t On March 28, artists Lauri Apple and Seth Gershberg hosted a participatory performance piece titled Twitter Island at the nonprofit Chicago Art Department gallery. They invited 18 volunteers, mostly non-artists, to gather together in a room for 90 minutes and communicate only with each other, and only using twitter. Didn’t it seem like every place in Second Life was called Fill-in-the-Blank Island? I
Last week, Bob Farrace , director of publications for the National Association of Secondary School Principals, asked this Twitter question on the ASAE Technology Listserv. There are a bunch of associations with an official presence on Twitter. Having a large number of followers does not necessarily translate into success on Twitter, but for these groups, it's a good indication that they're doing something right. Are any associations out there maintaining an official association Twitterstream? I'm considering setting one up and I'm looking for some successful practices that will
But in today’s world, it’s wise to consider complementing these appeals with tools like Facebook and Twitter. To get even more sophisticated, you might want separate pages for each type of media you use: one you’ll promote on Facebook, one you’ll promote on Twitter, one you’ll promote with email, etc. Now are some ideas on how to integrate Facebook Causes, Facebook Pages, and Twitter with your year-end fundraising. Last time, we looked at creating a year-end strategy for fundraising letters . According to FundRaising Success Magazine :
With all the blog posts I’ve done on Twitter for nonprofits , you know I’m having a blast with Twitter . even used Twitter to rewrite a fundraising appeal! Twitter isn’t a popularity contest. Twitter isn’t about how many I’m connecting with old friends and new ones. I
I met An Xiao on twitter . And I was excited to find out that she was to be the first artist featured on the Brooklyn Museum’s 1stfans Twitter Art Feed . For the 1stfans twitter project, An used Morse code to tweet the minutiae that has become ubiquitous on twitter. When her month-long twitter project was over, I asked An, via email, how it went, I don’t remember if I followed An or if she followed me, but I’m sure it had something to do with the Brooklyn Museum . I
Terrorist networks are using them to organize themselves, meanwhile we are still blocking Facebook and Twitter access within the Department of National Defence and the various arms of the military in fear of security breaches and intelligence leaks. The truth of the matter is, no matter how hard you try to block access, people will use social media regardless, since it is now an inherent part of human social interaction. I just came across this post by David Meerman Scott mentioning a new video released by the U.S Air Force regarding their use of new media.
One of my favourite tools for instantaneously finding and interacting with a niche community is WeFollow . call this a tool because it is one of thousands of websites that leverage the Twitter database for a very specific purpose. In this case that purpose is to help organize Twitter users according to 3 categories that people self-classify themselves under. When you first log onto the site, this is exactly what it asks you to do. I As a result, it’s essentially a categorical folksonomy of Twitter.
Social networking website gurus, Experience Project , on this past Thursday August 6th launched a brand new Twitter campaign called TwitCause designed to raise money for nonprofits through the Twitter website and its users (TwitCause is not really a Twitter application such as TweetDeck or Twitter On Facebook are - it's more of a proposition for Twitter users to join in on their effort to raise donations for nonprofits). If you are not a Twitter user - Twitter is a networking site that offers free accounts to anyone who wishes to join (like My Space
RT (retweet) this post on Twitter Ok, so I’m getting excited about a new idea. Who would get excited about all of us together starting an online community where we promote each other’s online fundraising? Would you be willing to commit to comment and vote for each other to win/raise money for your organization?
Instead, my business requires the constant use of interactive social platforms and user-generated applications. My big three channels are now Twitter , LinkedIn and my Blog . needed an effective mobile way to manage the numerous government and client department back-channel Twitter conversations that I had set-up on my laptop using Tweetdeck. I recently switched smartphones (now representing 50% of the worldwide cell phone market ) from RIM ’s Blackberry Storm to Apple’s iPhone 3GS . Why did I do it, and more importantly why should you care?
