I was just on a call with fellow members of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy folks when someone asked, “Does anyone here use Twitter or Facebook ?”. Twitter and Facebook and LinkedIn and YouTube are sites that are in the broad category of “social media.” Millions of people are using sites like Facebook and Twitter.

But in today’s world, it’s wise to consider complementing these appeals with tools like Facebook and Twitter. To get even more sophisticated, you might want separate pages for each type of media you use: one you’ll promote on Facebook, one you’ll promote on Twitter, one you’ll promote with email, etc.

I’m thrilled with the increase in Twitter usage I’m seeing! If people are using Twitter, they know their comments are public. Twitter is a fun space to put out things you’re thinking and to retweet other people’s wit and wisdom. But the power of Twitter really multiplies when you reply to those tweets.

Today sipping my morning coffee I clicked into Twitter and was intrigued by a tweet from @chrisbrogan. can only imagine what the team at McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a division of Johnson and Johnson, must be feeling. if McNeil Consumer Healthcare were a social media marketing client how would I advise them? You need to get familiar with at least one of the social media sites—I recommend Twitter , Facebook , or LinkedIn. In the last three weeks, I’ve given five talks about social media and fundraising to various groups of development officers. Today I was asked to sum up one of the sessions. Social media is “social”—be prepared to dialogue.

Not unlike the grass root movement of the '60's this will also influence change but this time in the world of healthcare. On the other side of the street some healthcare providers (physicians, nurses, physician assistants, etc.) My instincts tell me that this will be the next big area for digital/social media healthcare.
