Yesterday I attended a workshop organized by one of my favorite bloggers (and NTC roomie) Nancy Schwartz on how you deal with branding issues for your organization within social media. Before my boss left for vacation last week he said to me: “At the retreat I want you to talk about how we can use social media for prospect research, fundraising and advocacy.&#. wasn’t surprised that he asked me to talk about social media. If we do choose the broad social media strategy, who would execute it?
Many nonprofits have already dipped their toes into social media. But first, understand that social media is not about marketing, it’s about community. To succeed with social media, you have to genuinely appreciate the idea of community—offering help and value with no expectation of return.

It’s a debate that anyone using social media these days is having: How much personal information do I share when I’m using social media for work, and how much work information do my personal friends care to know? Do rules about social media at work impinge on staff’s freedom of speech?
These changes are long-term, and they demand more of nonprofits than seeking new funding or cutting programs. Not surprisingly, the world of social media offers some important clues.
