In the midst of reflecting on Pepsi Refresh, Disney and other CSR efforts , I received an email about another project with a social message– NBC’s Parenthood Project that worked in conjunction with the Boys and Girls Club. What I take away from both the Web site and Cathy’s answers is how integrated each facet of the project is–from the TV series, to leveraging social media through video, photos and text, to the universal concept of parenthood–all the way to identifying a non-profit that has a strong family strengthening initiative–it’s smart.

Here’s a brief history of the demand side for social media expertise : Back in late 2007, proactive organizations started frantically searching for someone to help them with all this social media “stuff”. They searched for the first thing that came to their mind, “ social media expert “. Surely, there must be an expert out there they though. Then in early 2008, the real rush came in as the field became more legitimate and the term “ social media consultant ” emerged.

How can I, in short, mobilize the community around my cause? Start putting up event invitations on your social media sites, and blogging about them, personally inviting twitterers, bloggers, and others to come. Go out into the real world and plug your social media sites at events where your supporters are congregating. Whether your nonprofit is on facebook, twitter, or myspace, you may be asking yourself, How can I get more facebook group members?
