If you’re sending donation requests by email then you need approval from officials in states where they land. There are civil penalties in California, New York, Illinois and many others. The Edge Group in Washington and California is celebrating their 5 year anniversary with a $1,000 award . The winner will be announced via email and on The Edge website on September 15, 2009.
I’m always trying to let you know right away when I learn about a new online award or grant. They believe that nonprofits often describe themselves with such generic language that they become invisible to the communities they are in.

There's a story there with actual individuals being affected. Such was the storyline for a campaign by Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), which told a universal tale of survival to communicate about the kit fox problem in Northern California. Information in the context of a story is dramatically more compelling than straight facts. Should they email a specific point person? If you heard that a certain type of fox is endangered, would you be moved to act? How about if you heard that a mama fox was trying to keep herself and her litter safe as their forest disappears? Now that's different.

Let's say your organization has a branch in California. Compare the time it would take to write copy, set up an email, if you are really technical, make sure it renders properly across all possible platforms and create versions for HTML/ text-only versioning. Even if you are an organization obsessed with the details of executing perfectly rendered emails, in a crisis, an email could easily get out the door in 48 hours. Regardless of where you stand on DM-it's dying, it's set-up for growth-one thing most of us who delve in the DM world can agree on is that compared to web-based fundraising channels, DM is not particularly agile.
