CompassPoint Nonprofit Services and The Meyer Foundation have just released a new report, "Daring to Lead 2006," exploring the leading causes of nonprofit executive burnout; in particular, widespread frustration with boards of directors and funders, and dissatisfaction with their pay. As a sector are we not taking care of ourselves?

For specific information about Form 990-N and provisions of the Pension Protection Act of 2006 mandating the revocation of exempt status, consult your attorney or tax advisor. The Forms 990-N will cover tax periods beginning after December 31, 2006, and will be due on the 15th day of the 5th month after a nonprofit's fiscal year ends.

If your organization doesn't have a large or developed donor base, yet, in a financial emergency, contact a local regional community foundation and ask about emergency grants. It can help to understand what, traditionally, does not get funded by grant money. Generally. No one wants to donate to a sinking ship! Look into this and ask around.

Had Lay lived, would he have released all of his Foundation's beneficiaries from their obligation to recognize him as a donor? What if a major donor of yours - one whose name is featured on your building plaque - were to be arrested and found guilty on charges of fraud and embezzlement? Would you remove his name from your building?

You should be thanking your large foundation, corporate, and major individual donors publicly and frequently already - this list should not be a secret - so what is so different about the annual report? I heard an interesting comment from another consultant this afternoon that I'm not sure I agree with. The reason? Donor poachers! Thanks!

I received an email from a college student asking if he could interview me about ePhilanthropy and the future of online fundraising. concepts, such as tagging and feeds, and how they can improve our practices.

Back in May, I first wrote about the impending merger of the Peninsula Community Foundation and Community Foundation Silicon Valley. said this because I truly admire and appreciate both foundations as they've been.
